ReactOS is a free, modern operating system based on the design of Windows® XP/2003. Written completely from scratch, it aims to follow the Windows® architecture designed by Microsoft from the hardware level right through to the application level. This is not a Linux based system, and shares none of the unix architecture.

The main goal of the ReactOS project is to provide an operating system which is binary compatible with Windows. This will allow your Windows applications and drivers to run as they would on your Windows system. Additionally, the look and feel of the Windows operating system is used, such that people accustomed to the familiar user interface of Windows® would find using ReactOS straightforward. The ultimate goal of ReactOS is to allow you to remove Windows® and install ReactOS without the end user noticing the change.

Please bear in mind that ReactOS 0.3.7 is still in alpha stage, meaning it is not feature-complete and is not recommended for everyday use.


A lot of people in popular discussion forums keep asking “why should I use ReactOS” or “why would someone need ReactOS” or “why not help develop Wine instead?” or “why not use Linux with Wine?”.

We have an answer for all these questions, but it's not some simple magic word. Let's name a few key issues here:

* There are plenty of *nix operating systems out there, this is very good. However they have different targeting (they perfectly fit server market, but desktop still isn't conquered, and several factors work against most Windows alternatives out today).
* There is currently no operating system which implements the kernel architecture design of MS Windows NT family (GNU/Linux is the best for comparison here: Linux was started as “clone” of Minix and Unix (eventually going on to be a Unix replacement), and ReactOS was started as “clone” of Windows NT).
* Linux+Wine is never going to be a complete replacement for a full Windows system. It's not only because Linux (despite there are some really user-friendly Linux distros out there), and not only because many users might find a transition to Linux/BSD difficult, but it's due to design and implementation decisions of Linux and Wine architectures, which prevent 100% compatibility.
* Even though Linux supports many types of hardware, Windows is still the dominant platform for device manufactorers. There are attempts to overcome this situation (like NDIS Wrapper for NT network card drivers, there are rumours about supporting NT video drivers, Captive NTFS for NT filesystem support), but ReactOS solves them from the first day by its design – be compatible with existing drivers and existing applications.
* There are many people who do not like how *nix systems behave or dislikes the conventions used. For them, Linux, BSD, and Mac OS X are not options, even before application compatibility and hardware support come into play. An operating system should give the consumers what they want instead of demanding the consumer conform. Even with WINE, you are still running an operating system that behaves quite differently from Windows, at a user and system level.
* Backwards compatibility. This is something vital for many people and companies, but the development philosophy of Linux and the GNU project do not consider it a priority. The Windows family has always went out of its way to ensure a stable API and backwards compatibility. By its design, ReactOS will also follow the philosophy of backwards compatibility with existing and future applications designed for the Windows NT family.
* There are no plans for Windows to become released under a GPL-compatible license (at least, ReactOS team is not aware of them).

Finally, ReactOS offers a third alternative, for people who are fed up with Microsoft's policies but do not want to give up the familiar environment, architectural design, and millions of existing software applications and thousands of hardware drivers.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows

Those who remember the early Spider-Man

games across consoles like Sega’s Genesis or even the Dreamcast will remember it fondly. They were nowhere near is impressive as some of the new games (like the fun Spider-Man 2 game) but they were fun nonetheless. It’s these early attempts that partly inspire the Spider-Man: Web of Shadows Amazing Allies Edition for the PSP. While it’s not a direct port of the console version of Spider-Man: Web of Shadows, this portable game has enough web-slinging action that’s just as entertaining.

Web of Shadows Amazing Allies Edition does borrow the plot from the console version, however, and it also includes the ability to make some choices along the way. The story starts off, interestingly enough, with Spider-Man running into a reporter for a rival newspaper looking for an exclusive. Whether you chose to stick around and answer his question or blow him off, your day quickly turns sour when Venom shows up. A fight erupts and Spidey wins but suddenly the alien symbiote explodes and our hero wakes up with a headache and wearing the Black Suit once again. Oh, but that’s not all, it seems like the rest of the alien mutated and scattered throughout the city.

It is S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Nick Fury who wakes Spidey up and tells him that the alien has become a threat to the city that must be stopped immediately seeing as it has a corrupting effect any anyone it might come in contact with it, including the city’s heroes and villains. With things looking bleak, the PSP version of Web of Shadows introduces a number of favorite Marvel Comics good guys and bad guys you can summon as allies in your fight to stop the alien menace (but I’ll get more into that in a moment).

The game played like a traditional side-scrolling Spider-Man game. You can swing around the environment and you can always crawl up walls and ceilings as well. Spidey also makes use of his acrobatic skills and incredible strength as well for when you need to carry a civilian or two out of harms way. There is also the option to change from the Red Suit or the Black Suit via the Select button. He even has his Spider Senses but in this game it is uses to locate people in need of your help or to seek out hidden threats. This is helpful seeing as there is a lot of ground to cover even if this is a side-scrolling action game.

Along the way you will encounter civilians in need of your help. A dialogue box opens up when you encounter a civilian and there are basically two options you can make in the game. You can take the good path by accept to offer aid whether it’s rescuing a cat stuck on the roof of a building or carrying a whining socialite out of harms way. On the other hand, if you allow the Black Suit to take a hold of you, then Spidey can chose to leave said whining socialite to suffer her fate. Aside from gaining a negative or positive reputation, the choices you make doesn’t change the game completely but it does make for some truly funny situations and conversations.

Switching between the Red Suit and Black Suit isn’t just cosmetic purposes. Donning the Black Suit allows you to knock enemies out with your web rather than disabling them the way you would wearing the Red Suit. The Black Suit also allows you to break through certain walls and you can web-zip a bit faster. Combat also changes a little with each suit and you’ll find that the Black Suit dishes out more damage than when you wear the Red Suit.

Speaking of combat, the punches and kicks are handled rather well and you can always perform the usual Spider-Man tricks such as jump kicks and uppercuts. There are a variety of Power-ups that give Spidey extra strength or tougher skin for a short period of time. The interesting power-up, however, is the ability to call a friend or foe as an ally as a summon. Web of Shadows takes a number of characters from the Marvel Universe to come to your aid. You can have Galactus appear (well, actually his foot makes an appearance) to clear all enemies out of your way or maybe have the X-Men’s Nighcrawler to teleport into the area to knock everyone out. There are dozens of characters to use as summons so you will find everything from Moon Knight to Wolverine.

You can also learn new abilities as well as pick your summons and other power-ups before starting a mission. This is great seeing as you will get into a number of boss battles with familiar Spider-Man villains such as Shocker, Kraven the Hunter and Mysterio. Unfortunately, Web of Shadows does come with its flaws. For one thing, it gets old beating up the seemingly endless number of mindless thugs that keep coming after you. Sometimes you get to fight robots but the change isn’t all that different. Worst yet is the fact that there are a number of freezes during the action. The freezes even happen during the most inopportune moments during combat or boss battles and it hurts the game considerably.

Graphically speaking, the game isn’t very pretty for a PSP title. In fact, the game looks like a really attractive GameBoy Advance title. The only thing good about the visuals is that the characters look great in action and during cut scenes. Its backgrounds and visual effects, on the other hand, are too bland for a handheld capable of displaying better than this. There’s an Ok soundtrack featured in the game and it never gets annoying. This is joined by a decent voice cast that should have been featured more than what is heard in this game.

Spider-Man: Web of Shadows Amazing Allies Edition for the PSP is a worthwhile action game that captures the spirit of the old Spidey games while spinning its own unique web of fun. Adding a number of power-ups and the ability to summon heroes and villains to come to your aid is a nice touch. I just wish the game contain too many mindless thug beatings and constant framerate stutter. Still, there’s quite a lot to like about this one and if you fancy a game with choices between walking the good path or a bad one then this is one portable superhero game you will most definitely want to play.

Review Scoring Details for Spider-man: Web of Shadows Amazing Allies Edition

Gameplay: 7.0
The fighting mechanics feel like the old Spider-Man games and this isn’t necessarily a bad thing at all. There are some interesting power-ups to mix things up during combat and they don’t call it the Amazing Allies Edition for nothing. Plus, the Black Suit lets you be deliciously bad.

Graphics: 6.5
Visually, Web of Shadows offers some rather decent graphics … if this were a GameBoy Advance game. Spider-Man and the collection of Marvel characters that make an appearance are instantly recognizable but it’s just too bad that everything else looks rather bland.

Sound: 6.5
The music is passable despite the fact that it’s recycled throughout the game and the sound effects are only minimal. At least the voices are handled well during cut scenes and Spider-Man is often very witty and funny in this game.

Difficulty: Medium
It takes a number of punches to bring down lowly thugs in this game but it’s nothing our hero can’t handle. The real challenge comes from battling bosses such as Venom or Hobgoblin.

Concept: 7.0
There are choices that pop up the feel true to Spidey’s personality when he wears the Black Suit and having a lineup of Marvel friends and villains as summoning characters is a great idea that works well throughout the game. Who wouldn’t want to call up Wolverine or Moon Knight to lend a helping hand when you’re outnumbered?

Overall: 7.0
Fans of the early Spider-Man games will certainly get a kick out of Web of Shadows and, thanks to a number of interesting features; it’s one of the better PSP games featuring the Web-slinger. Still, there are some issues that do hold this game back from being a truly amazing superhero game but what is here is still fun if you’re looking for solid portable Spider-Man game.

Tekken Dark Resurrection PSP ISO

The gameplay in Tekken: Dark Resurrection is also spot-on with what you'd expect from the series. The controls are responsive, though the occasionally tricky diagonals on the PSP's D pad took an hour or so of getting used to before we could pull off combos and juggles without trouble. If you like, you can also use the analog stick to control movement. The fighting itself is right in line with previous Tekken games, though there are three characters here that weren't in Tekken 5. Armor King returns to the lineup, and there are two all-new characters. Lili is a rich girl with street-fighting skills, and Dragunov is a Russian special forces operative who fights in a sambo style with plenty of powerful strikes. Both of the new characters fit right into the lineup and seem as deep and interesting as the rest of the cast. Also, unlike most Tekken games, Dark Resurrection starts with the complete cast of 34 characters available, so you won't have to dig through story mode multiple times to get all of the fighters.

Need for Speed Carbon: Own the City

Need for Speed Carbon: Own the City is, for all intents and purposes, an entirely different game from the Need for Speed Carbon that's currently appearing on the Xbox 360, PC, PlayStation 2, and so on. The basic conceit is much the same--you and your team of street racers take on other crews in a bid to take total control of the city--but a lot of the details are different and many are better for it.

Own the City is ultimately a revenge tale, which starts off with a flashback to the event that triggers your character's vengeance. During a street race that both you and your brother, Mick, are competing in, something goes horribly wrong. The accident leaves you in the hospital with some nasty amnesia and Mick dead. But it seems that there was a third car involved, which was no accident at all. Six months later when you get back on your feet, the scene has changed dramatically. So you take to the streets to find out who's responsible for your brother's death with your old racing buddy, Carter, and your brother's ex-girlfriend, Sara, by your side. It's a surprisingly resonant story that takes a little time to flesh out and define some of the core characters. It also has some good twists and turns that really help to steel your character's resolve. The story sequences are pretty slickly produced, with some distinct-looking comic-style art and voice work that tends toward the better side of average.

In its apparent continued effort to expand the Need for Speed geography, EA has set Own the City in an all-new fictional town called Coast City. Like Bayview, Rockport, and Palmont City before it, Coast City is a large, sprawling metropolis with a lot of unique districts. There's plenty of run-down grit in the industrial, junkyard, inner city, and rock quarry areas, but they're not far from the lengthy tracts of winding highways that make their way up into the chilly surrounding mountains. On the other side of town, you'll find the more refined side of Coast City, with a sleek glass-and-steel high-rise district. It also includes a cozier residential district, a nice college campus, and the city's airport. Even if this were a full-fledged console game, the size of Coast City would be respectable. It's got a level of detail and an organic layout that gives you a really strong sense of place. The distinct feel of each district also gives the whole game a lot of personality. But all of that detail comes at a price because at higher speeds, the frame rate can get a little choppy.

Coast City is effectively your playground, and you can tool around as you please. You'll occasionally run into rival racing crews who can challenge you to a race on the spot, as well as cops who don't take too kindly to street racers. Whether you're in a race or just out on the town, there's not a lot of traffic in Coast City. What's there also looks a little cheap, which takes a little away from the game's reality. Your real objective is to take the fight to the rival racing crews throughout Coast City. Each district is controlled by a different crew, and there's a set list of race events that you have to win. If you win a number of events, you'll get to take on the crew boss. If you beat the crew boss, you'll not only take control of that district but also unlock new cars and upgrades for purchase. There's a fairly focused progression to the main story mode. You'll only have access to one or two districts throughout most of the game, limiting which events you can take on at any given time. Typically, though, there are usually more events in each district than you need to win in order to take on the district's crew boss. So there is some flexibility as to which races you take on because of the extra events.

There's little variety to the types of events. You can expect a number of standard circuit, sprint, and knockout races. There are also escape events where you have to get out of a crew's turf in a limited amount of time while the crew gives chase. The delivery events challenge you to outrun a group of challengers to a specific delivery point. The escape and delivery events are pretty similar in practice and both come with a fair amount of frustration. You're guided to your goal in these modes by an onscreen arrow that will point you to your specific turns as you approach them. The problem is that the arrow generally doesn't start to turn early enough, so you'll often blow past your turns on the first run-through. Even worse, the arrow doesn't always point you toward the fastest possible route. It's only through repetition and memorization that you'll win many of these events. The most unique events are the crew takedown events. These are surprisingly reminiscent of the takedown events first seen in EA's own, aptly named, Burnout 3: Takedown. Here, you're given a limited amount of time to knock a number of rival crew cars by slamming into them repeatedly. This also provides generally a good change of pace from the rest of the game's typically speed-obsessed events.

Even if the event types aren't fantastic, the handling on the cars makes up for a lot. There's a great selection of real-world cars to purchase and customize, including many of the tuner, muscle, and exotic cars found in the console versions of Need for Speed Carbon. Each one also comes with unique and generally appropriate handling characteristics. Cars that you unlock in the career mode become available in the game's multiplayer mode, which lets you compete in circuit and sprint races both locally and over the Internet. It also means that you'll need to play a good deal of the game single-player before you get online. Our online experience was a little laggy, but it's pretty well fleshed-out. It also has a ranking system that helps ensure you'll be taking on similarly experienced players.

Regardless of where you play Own the City, it's not an overly technical, realistic racer. You can pretty much plow through any peripheral traffic and scrape your way around corners without so much as a scratch. The collisions are also a little inconsistent. Sometimes you'll see bumpers passing through each other when cars are rubbing and, on occasion, a bump will cause the other car to go flying through the air. It does, however, take some discipline. You're also not going to be powersliding your way around every single corner. Although it's a little slow to start, once you trade up to something with a little power, the game's got a great sense of speed. It's also fantastic to drive to the darkly energetic licensed soundtrack, which is accentuated by the sense of speed. It's too bad that a lot of the engine sounds are kind of whiny, but the eclectic, thematically consistent blend of straight-ahead rock, grimy hip-hop, and futuristic electro more than makes up for it.

One of the features that really sets Own the City apart from other street racers is its team racing mechanics. In many of the events that you'll take on, you'll be allowed to take up to two wingmen with you onto the track. Each wingman will play a specific role. Brawlers can knock an opposing car out for a few seconds, while assassins can incapacitate it for even longer by laying down spike strips. Drafters will give you a short speed boost by cutting in front of you and letting you slipstream behind them. As you slowly take over the city, rival crew members will become available as wingmen. You'll find some also have unique subclasses, such as fixers, who will earn you a little cash bonus when you win races; and mechanics, who will provide you with a performance boost when they race with you. It's pretty surprising that the wingman mechanics in Own the City are actually better realized than what was featured in the console versions of Need for Speed Carbon, but it's still not perfect. For example, brawlers and assassins can only target cars that are in front of you. So if there are multiple cars in front of you, it's difficult to pick a specific one. When they're not active, the wingmen smartly stay just behind you. But once you give one of them the go-ahead, they seem to have little regard for your car. They'll often bully their way past you and slow you down when they're ostensibly on their way to help you.

There's already a ton of accomplished racing games on the PSP, but the core driving in Need for Speed Carbon: Own the City is solid enough. The unique features are also interesting enough for it to warrant a look from street racing enthusiasts. It's different enough from and, in some significant ways, better than the console versions of Need for Speed Carbon that fans of those games will find a whole new game to enjoy in Own the City.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 features a couple of new game modes, but things are still largely unchanged in Konami's football franchise.

The Good

• Online play is mostly lag-free.

• Lack of improvement to core gameplay
• Player animations look stilted
• Lacks many official licences
• Poor presentation and commentary

Pro Evolution Soccer has become an established franchise on the PSP, and the 2009 version is the fifth for the console. This year's edition makes a few new additions, including the new Become a Legend mode, online play, and a soundtrack that doesn't make you cringe. But with outdated visuals, as well as an absence of licensed clubs and leagues, there's still plenty of room for improvement.

The gameplay in PES 2009 remains largely unchanged from last year, but matches are still challenging and fun to play, and the controls are still intuitive and responsive. It's easy to link passes and moves using the face buttons, but tricks are awkwardly performed by double-tapping the shoulder buttons. Matches feel fluid; you can easily pass and cross the ball to teammates, setting up some spectacular goals in the process. You'll need to keep an eye on Pro Evo's always-challenging AI, which is constantly looking for opportunities to snatch the ball from you, and this makes scoring goals all the more rewarding. There are plenty of game modes packed onto the UMD, with Exhibitions, Leagues, Regional Cups, a World Tour and the Master League all vying for your attention. The latter allows you to take control of your team's management as you play all of the league and cup matches a real team would play. The only really disappointing game mode is Training, which offers no tutorials to provide tips to Pro Evo newcomers; just the opportunity to hone tricks without hassle from opposition players.

Become a Legend is a brand new mode for this year's game, which shifts your focus from controlling an entire team to just one individual player. You take a fresh-faced teen from obscurity to the international spotlight as you work your way up from a minor team through to a professional club, international stardom, and eventually retirement. You can customise player attributes for your virtual self, including name, appearance, footedness, and you can even choose from more than 70 different goal celebrations. On the pitch, the camera focuses on your single player, while the rest of the team is controlled by the AI.

Ultimately, Become a Legend is a novel but dull take on Pro Evolution Soccer. At the start of your career, you can spend a considerable amount of time on the bench, and while you can speed up the game when spectating, it's still a boring process. Once your team's had some on-field success, you'll be able to move to more impressive clubs, but you're not rewarded for being a team player by performing passes and making tackles. The result is that much of your success comes down to the effectiveness of your AI teammates, which makes for an unrewarding experience.

PES 2009 features online play for the first time, pitting you one-on-one against players from around the world. This is a welcome addition, because playing real people is certainly more rewarding than playing against an AI opponent. However, with occasional lag and an archaic registration system that makes you type in your login credentials every time you play, it can be a frustrating experience. If you find a decent connection, then online gameplay can offer the same enjoyable feel and experience as local multiplayer, but with only five- or 10-minute exhibition matches on offer, it's a basic mode that offers little in the way of longevity.

While the Dutch, French, and Italian leagues appear in full this year, Liverpool and Manchester United are the only officially licensed Premier League teams. The rest of England's top leagues are stuck with generic regional names. For example, Tottenham Hotspur is back to being named North East London, despite making a brief licensed appearance in last year's edition. The Scottish Premier League suffers even greater indignity, with only Celtic and Rangers present in licensed form and only as extra teams to be added to custom leagues. Other popular leagues, including the German Bundesliga, USA's Major League Soccer, and Australia's A-League, are completely missing. It's also a shame that Konami's much-touted Champions League licence hasn't made it to the PSP.

Pro Evo 2009 isn't an ugly game, but the player models and animations are starting to look a bit dated. The character animations lack fluidity and variation. Although players are easy to control, they certainly don't look realistic. The main menu has received a pop-art facelift this year, but the pregame menus and in-game displays look stale. Thankfully, the pervasive menu advertising from PES 2008 is gone. While there are regular advertising billboards around the pitch, they're not obtrusive and fit the setting. The soundtrack has also undergone an overhaul, replacing the J-pop numbers of PES 2008 with a mix of alt-rock and pop, which suits the tone of the game.

At its core, Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 doesn't deviate from previous entries in the series, and while there are new game modes this year, they don't offer a compelling reason to upgrade. The new online mode, while shallow, is still fun to play, and the Become a Legend mode is a novel but boring take on the standard game. This is still an enjoyable football experience at heart, but it's only for those willing to look past the game's flaws.
